SSC CGL is one of the most competitive government exams in India, and a large number of aspirants lose marks not because they studied too little, but because they studied the wrong things.
Some skip topics they never knew were part of the paper, while others spend weeks on chapters that rarely appear.
The fix is simple. Before you open a single book, get a clear picture of the SSC CGL syllabus 2026.
Once you know exactly what each tier tests and how the marks are split, planning your preparation and choosing the right study material becomes much easier.
Disclaimer: The SSC CGL syllabus and exam pattern shared in this blog are based on the latest available information from the Staff Selection Commission. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Question: Are Tier 1 marks counted in the final merit?
Answer: No, they are not. Tier 1 works as a qualifying test, so clearing it simply opens the door to Tier 2. The marks that decide your rank come from Tier 2 Paper 1, and from Paper 2 or Paper 3 if you have applied for those posts.
Question: Is there negative marking in SSC CGL?
Answer: Yes. In Tier 1, 0.50 mark is cut for each wrong answer. In Tier 2 Paper 1, 1 mark is cut, and in Papers 2 and 3, 0.50 mark is cut.
Question: What is the syllabus of SSC CGL?
Answer: The SSC CGL syllabus covers four main subjects: Quantitative Aptitude, Reasoning, English and General Awareness. Tier 1 tests them at a basic level, while Tier 2 Paper 1 tests them in more depth along with Computer Knowledge and a typing test. Statistics and Finance and Economics are extra papers only for certain posts.
Question: Which book is best for SSC CGL?
Answer: No single book covers everything, so pick one per subject. Rakesh Yadav Class Notes works well for maths, Pinnacle's chapterwise solved papers for reasoning, Aman Sir's Class Notes Grammar for English, and Lucent's General Knowledge for GA. Add a yearly current affairs book and solved papers once your basics are ready.
Question: Is the SSC CGL and CHSL syllabus the same?
Answer: They overlap a lot, but they are not the same. Both test maths, reasoning, English and general awareness, and their Tier 1 papers look similar. CGL is a graduation level exam, so its Tier 2 questions are tougher, and it has extra papers in Statistics and Finance and Economics that CHSL does not have.
